MOSES F. HARRELL - MARY ANN FAIRCLOTH

3H. MOSES F. HARRELL, "Mode," born August 1841 in Gadsden County, Florida to Morgan Harrell and Sarah Johnson. Died around 1918 in Thomas County, Georgia. Possibly buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville in an unmarked grave.

According to the roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia, Moses served in the Army, C. S. A. 54th Regiment, Co. G, Volunteer Infantry Army of Tennessee, Muscogee County, Georgia. Enlisted as a private 22 January 1863. His name appears on a roll of Prisoners of War that was surrendered by Maj. Gen. Sam Jones to Brig. Gen. E. M. McCook at Tallahassee, Fla. in 1865. He was paroled in Bainbridge, Georgia on 20 May 1865. The enlistment papers of Moses F. Harrell were signed with an X.

It is reported that Moses and his brother John, who were in the same company and regiment, once plotted to "play hookey" from duty by chewing tobacco to make themselves sick. They made themselves so sick that they refused to ever have anything to do with tobacco again for the rest of their lives. Grandchildren also remember their accounts of having to eat such things as dog, rat, and horse while in camp, to avoid starving to death.

     m. MARY ANN FAIRCLOTH, probably around 1862. She was also called Polly Ann. She was born in April 1846 in Georgia to William and Sarah Faircloth. She died c1918 in Thomas County, Georgia and may be buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville in an unmarked grave. She and Moses lived most of their married lives in Mitchell County, Georgia, near Vada, in an old country house on a farm. They raised three of their seven sons to adulthood, also their grandson, A. B. Harrell. After they got older, they moved into the house with their son Elmore Harrell in Thomas County, Georgia.

Military papers of Moses F. Harrell follow.
